"Rock N Resort 2007 Replay"
Review By J.P. Lewis

Southside Johnny & The Jukes
Rock N Resort 2007 will certainly leave a lasting memory for all those who attended. It is hard to choose a favorite headliner, as all performed at the top of their game.

Hip Kitty kicked of the main stage on Friday, followed by an excellent show by The New Rascals. Then, REO Speedwagon played hit after hit to round up the first night's headliners.

Saturday's main stage started off early with "A Party" featuring Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, who had the crowd dancing, singing and screaming for more. Next, a very touching Tribute To The Troops was featured on the big screen with a special performance by country artist, Michael Peterson. The final headliner for Saturday, Cheap Trick pulled out all stops and all their hits, while guitarist, Rick Nielson, showered the crowd with a variety of guitar picks.

While most of the campers had left on Sunday in previous years, this year saw the largest final day crowd thusfar. George Thorogood and The Destroyers certainly left a lasting impression with a hard rocking set highlighting 30 years of classic rock anthems from GTD. Closing the festival out under a full moon was Pink Floyd tribute band, Any Colour You Like. Highlighted with a bit of Oz and other classic video, ACYL performed flawless renditions of Floyd classics for a crowd that howled at the dark side of the moon.

Stage Two, this year was located on the main festival grounds and brought a wide variety of musical styles from country to jazz and reggae to rock.

Notable performances on Friday included Northeast Ohio's Assault, Lock N Load and 1959. We also witnessed stellar performances from Toys In The Attic (NY), Paul Green's School of Rock All Stars (Philadelphia, PA) and Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (Hartford, CT).

Kitty Kitty Bang Bang

Saturday brought rocking sets from The Spider Lilies and Truage, whiile Laredo threw down some hot country music and Hip Kitty from Nashville, TN kicked out a dynamite set. Northeast Ohio mainstays, LaFlavour, had people dancing and MoShambo brought down the house with a superb set to end the night.

Sunday on Stage Two, Altered Ending kicked out hard rock originals, while BE Mann laid down the Reggae dance grooves. Then, two tribute bands, Mojo Risin (Doors) and Abbey Road (Beatles) brought back classics from the past. After George Thorogood, we saw Rebel Girl and Hell's House Band whip the crowd into a rock n roll frenzy to close out Stage Two on Sunday.

Ryan Humbert Band
For those that enjoyed the water park offerings, The Tiki Bar Stage also provided some of the best acoustic groups and solo performers in Northeast Ohio.

Though the Friday morning's rain kept most of the beach goers at bay, Tiki Bar hosts, Lou Man and Casandra Rose of Silkstone, kicked it off with classic rock and giveaways.

As the day progressed, the crowd gathered to see Jimmy Chesterfield and Joe Waller, Big Pat Masalko, Paul Guerra and Naturally Blue perform first class sets of acoustic classics and originals.

Saturday at the beach was much warmer, which brought out many more visitors who were rocked by Roger Latham and Joe Vitale Jr., who both performed top notch sets. Then the girls took over the Tiki Bar Stage, as the crowd was blown away by Alexis Antes, Robin Stone and Valerie Custer.

Sunday heated up again with Gordon Oliver, The DMT Trio, The Ryan Humbert Trio and Mike Lenz providing great sets from the Northeast Ohio talent pool, while Kevin Specht brought his brand of blues up from Columbus, Ohio to close out the beach stage for the weekend.

With the growning number of early campers each year, Rock N Resort was proud to bring a variety of talent to the Pre-Fest Kick Off Party in the Melody Barn on Thursday night.

Kicking off the party was the Clay's Park Battle of the Bands winner, Cindy Crawford's Little Sister and an excellent Janis Joplin Tribute by Ohio's own, Ball and Chain.

Stage II Crowd Jammin

Closing out the the Kick Off Party was none other than Clay's Park's House Band, The Overtones, making their fourth appearance at Rock N Resort. The band featured rock n roll classics and was a great way to start the weekend.

During the festival, the Melody Barn hosted the second year of Rock N Resort's Music Workshops. The workshops featured pro performers and industry pros to provide insight and opportunities for young musicians and working performers. Rick Ballas (Marshall Tucker Band) provided an insight into the new technologies for songwriting and home recording on Friday, and then pair up with Lou Man to give an intimate discussion on marketing, promotions and also breaking the myths behind the music business. Victoria Bonk of Rawk On Promotions (Toys In The Attic) then talked about band management to young groups and performers who wanted to know when and how to get a manager for their groups.

Saturday, the music workshops were all about drums and percussion. Ed Ellis filled in at the last minute to demonstrate various styles and drum techniques to an eager group of players, followed by an interactive drum circle led by Fred Goodnight. The entire crowd got involved, whether they beat on a drum, banged on a table, clapped their hands or danced in the aisles.

Sunday brought a fine group of professionals to demonstrate electronic keyboards (Rich Waller), bass guitar (James Walker Jr.) and guitar (Jason Rivera with keyboardist, Chery Riveria). With the dynamic talent in the room, an impromptu jam session broke out, demonstrating how all of the instruments and performers work together.

A special note of thanks needs to go out to Gregg and Karen Rappaport and their son, Alex, who travelled from Sarasota, FL to attend the festival, as well as each of the workshops presented. Good luck in your musical pursuits Alex!
